  • Areas of Focus for New Folks

Areas of Focus for New Folks

Areas of focus when you are new. Posture: Shoulder and hip alignment to achieve a strong spine. Improve your hip range of motion (deep squat). Keep elbows close to your ribs when you require strong arms. Pace: Training is training. It’s not competition. If you’re not getting passed, swept or submitted it’s not because you’re good, it’s because you’re stagnant. Slow down and use less strength. Non-attribute based training. Standing: Single leg takedowns. Guard pulling. Guard bottom: Learn how to get back to your feet. Learn how to get underneath your opponents to off-balance them. Avoid trying to submit until you feel confident with the above two ....

    Be a Safe Training Partner!

Be a Safe Training Partner! It is our responsibility to look out for one another on the mat and to truly pay attention to each other’s safety. In a Jiu-Jitsu Academy, there are people from every demographic and all walks of life. This melting pot of individuals is one of the things that makes our academy so special. But it can also be what makes training dangerous. In order to have a harmonious training environment, we must understand each other’s capabilities. As time goes on, potential competitors will want to engage in more competitive training, while others may be doing Jiu-Jitsu for different reasons. The coexistence of these different practitioners is 100% possible ....

    Kids BJJ and Martial Arts

FAQs of for Kids Jiu-Jitsu at Ground Control What is the difference between Jiu-Jitsu and other forms of martial arts for kids? Jiu-Jitsu will teach your children that they don't need to learn how to punch and kick in order to control someone and protect themselves from bullying. Instead of learning moves through katas or prearranged set of movements carried out on a cooperative training partner, they will learn how to apply grappling techniques on a resisting training partner who's not cooperating and is counteracting with his own moves. Strategic grips and positioning control make Jiu-Jitsu. How large are your class sizes and what’s the ratio Instructor/Student? Class ....

    The Four Stages of Learning

I’ve seen this model referred to in other areas of learning and I think it easily applies to jiu-jitsu… The four stages of consciousness. It all seemed out of reach and a little mystical early on. I was told the best way to learn was mat time. The more time on the mats the more I would learn. Conscious Incompetence “You know that you don’t know something” I started learning about the positions and seeing that there were techniques that people learned to roll me ....
